Physical media is on it’s way out, and opinion is split on that. Some fans enjoy having the safety of a physical piece of media, as things are moved and edited on streaming services constantly. Others view it as a total waste of space to keep things like DVD & Blu-Ray’s around their houses. WWE is now starting to lean towards the latter of these options, and will no longer be producing DVD’s for three major regions.
WWE Home Video Stopping Releases In USA, Canada, and Australia
It might come as a shock to many that WWE has still been putting out DVD & Blu-Ray releases, as they have heavily focused on the WWE Network (now part of Peacock in the United States). However, fans could still go out and pick up PPV events on DVD months after they aired, or get special compilations like the best TV & PPV matches of a given year.
Since 1999, WWE Home Video has been releasing DVD’s, with the section of the company existing since 1985. Back then it was Coliseum Video. The DVD era started with Wrestlemania 15, and will end with Survivor Series 2021 – with Survivor Series on DVD dropping on December 28th in both the United States & Canada.
Australia is suffering a similar fate, though they have releases set until March – due to a different release schedule. Extreme Rules is coming out in December, Crown Jewel in February, and finally Survivor Series in March – ending the run.
The UK Will Have DVD Releases Until Atleast March 2022… And Possibly Beyond
However, you might still be able to get upcoming shows on DVD & Blu-Ray… if you import from the UK. They have releases planned for WWE Day One and Royal Rumble 2022. Nothing has been announced past those events, but physical media tends to sell better in that region – which gives a shred of hope. Should these releases be a success, future events like Wrestlemania could come to DVD & Blu-Ray as well.
This news is bittersweet for me personally. My love of wrestling came from the tapes I grew up on, and I had continued collecting DVD events up until 2019. However, most fans knew this day would come – as things move to a streaming heavy direction.
