There are awesome moments scattered throughout the history of professional wrestling and Stephanie turning on Vince makes this day in wrestling history a special one.
The WWE was firing on all cylinders at this point in the Monday Night Wars, and their story telling was second to none.
For the last couple of years prior to this, Vince McMahon had created the character of Mr. McMahon to fill a heel role as they were sorely lacking in the WWE at the time.
Eventually, he brought his family into the mix with Stephanie marrying Triple H while she was drugged being a main angle at the time.
Born for the role
Like her father, Stephanie has proven herself one of the best heels of all time, and it came about when Vince faced Triple H in a No Holds Barred Match at Armageddon on December 12, 1999. The loser would be finished.
The buildup for this was awesome and the way it was carried out was near perfection. Triple H shared his memories of that moment in his Making the Game book.
Special thanks to @awrestlinghistorian for the excerpt.
“We decided to seal her fate as a full-fledged heel at the Pay-Per-View. Toward the end of the match, I’m down, helpless in the corner, when Vince is about to reconfigure my face with my very own sledgehammer. Before he can bring it down on me, Steph rushes into the ring. She pleads with him to let her do it. Wanting to allow his daughter momentary retribution over the man who ruined her life, Vince hands over the sledgehammer. I’m in front of her, too beaten and exhausted to defend myself, but she just can’t hit me. Vince is telling her to get on with it. ‘Do it, Stephanie! Hit him! Destroy him for what he did to you!’ But she’s not moving. I finally get up and slowly take the hammer away from her. Then I use it to unsympathetically finish Vince off.
“With her father lying bloodied and beaten on the canvas, Stephanie turns to give me a hug. And it’s on. We could see that this turn would give Vince a chance to get off TV every week. On camera, we played it out by having Vince so disgusted over losing his daughter that he leaves the company. Just walks away. Stephanie and I take full control of the family business and bring it into what we referred to as The McMahon-Helmsley Era.“ Triple H, Making The Game book.
This is one of those moment we’ll never forget as it was as near perfect as any moment can be. They grabbed us and took us along for the ride and we loved every second of it.
Until here, Stephanie was the prim and proper Billion Dollar Princess and it was great seeing her opening up and follow in Vince’s heel footsteps.
