This past Saturday came with an emotional PPV from Ring of Honor. Final Battle: End Of An Era would be capped off with Jonathan Gresham submitting Jay Lethal as the locker room surrounded the ring, to claim the original ROH World Championship. He will carry this belt to NJPW Strong and his new company of Terminus, and intends to keep the spirit of ROH alive until it returns in April 2022.
Jonathan Gresham Wants To Face Two ROH Legends
Immediately after the show, Gresham would address the crowd. During this, he gave a hint at the future of his reign as ROH World Champion. He’d say he wants to face “two men who are very important to the company’s history” and under Pure Wrestling rules. These are both Bryan Danielson & CM Punk, who are currently in AEW – but made their names in ROH. Alongside Samoa Joe, they’re perhaps the most iconic ROH World Champions of all time.
He’d also indicate that Terminus will focus on the Pure Rules format, unlike ROH who only went back to it as a last resort. This Gresham viewed as a sign of disrespect – and will not allow that to ever happen again with him as champion. The Pure Tournament was how ROH came back from their COVID-shutdown, and was an absolute joy for old and new fans alike. Gresham was the star of the show, winning every tournament match in a different way – a trend that continued with his reign as Pure Champion. Danielson is technically a former Pure Champion, having originally unified the belt into the ROH World Championship. Meanwhile Punk made it to the finals of the tournament to crown the first champion back in 2004.
Bringing Honor Back To The ROH World Championship
Now in an interview with Justin Barrasso for Sports Illustrated, Gresham would declare that he feels the pressure to keep the spirit of ROH ahead. When it comes to the future of Ring of Honor, the plan is to get back to shows in 2022, where they will try to book the biggest indy stars for shows. Gresham takes being champion very seriously, and would have the following to say.
“As champion, it is up to me to keep the spirit and the essence of Ring of Honor alive. I will preserve and protect Pure wrestling as the Ring of Honor world champion. At one time, being the Ring of Honor champion meant that you were the world’s best professional wrestler. But that moniker was taken away, and my mission is to restore honor to the title. I need to step in the ring with those two men. Until then, I’ll take on all challengers for the Ring of Honor title. I plan on defending the title, but I will only defend it under Pure professional wrestling rules, which is the way it always should have been.”
