It’s no secret that tag team wrestling has never been a massive focus in WWE, with Vince McMahon often being the noted reason as to why. While they have had some incredible tag teams over the years, and even to this day groups like New Day & The Usos are some of the best in the world – they’re never as big as singles stars.
Tag teams in WWE are often used to launch singles stars, as seen right now with Omos & Riddle, who are expected to break off from AJ Styles & Randy Orton respectively. However, with some new comments from former WWE writer Freddie Prinze Jr.
Vince McMahon Doesn’t Want To Pay Four People For One Match
On his new podcast, Wrestling with Freddie – he would discuss speaking with Vince McMahon about tag team wrestling. At the time, he was pushing hard for a big feud between The Hart Dynasty & The Usos – which could have produced some PPV main event level matches. However, Vince McMahon sees tag team wrestling as bad business – and told Freddie the following.
“I connected with David Hart Smith a lot and I really want to get him and TJ Wilson over. I worked hard to do it, I failed those boys, and I never got over that – I failed The Usos too. Tag team wrestling is tough. I remember Vince, I was working so hard on building up a tag team division and Vince said, ‘Freddie, I gotta pay four guys for one fucking match.’ I kind of went, ‘Oh.’ I had never looked at it like that. It’s show business. I was in charge of the Colon Brothers, I named Primo, that was my name. It kind of changed my perspective on things and the way I approached storylines. I couldn’t pitch for as much anymore. “
The New Day Are The Exception To This Rule
This is ignoring the payment optics of battle royals or Survivor Series elimination matches – this does help to explain why tag teams are not booked as top acts in the company. The New Day are as close as we’ve gotten to this, with two of it’s members in Kofi Kingson & Big E becoming WWE Champion while the group is active.
They’re more the exception than the rule in the modern era, with them selling merchandise like hotcakes. If a team is able to bring in big money, they’re worth the investment – but we’ll never see an AEW level focus on tag team wrestling in WWE so long as Vince runs the show.
