Ever since his debut in on WWE ECW in January 2008, Kofi Kingston has been an easy fan favorite. He was always destined for greatness, and while he etched his name in the annals of wrestling history as WWE Champion, he will likely be best known as one of the best tag team wrestlers in WWE history.
Kofi is a ten time tag team champion, and has won the belt with four different sets of partners. He is best known for teaming with Big E and Xavier Woods as the pancake slinging New Day. Other tag team partners he claimed gold with include CM Punk, Evan Bourne, and R-Truth.
Kofi Kingston And His First Tag Team Gold
In 2008, while teaming with CM Punk, Kofi Kingston would win his first tag team title. They would defeat Cody Rhodes & Ted DiBiase Jr to win the World Tag Team Championships. Their alliance was formed after Kofi came to Punks aid when Randy Orton attacked the then World Heavyweight Champion backstage at Unforgiven 2008, an attack which would cost Punk to vacate the World Title. Their reign would only last 47 days before losing the belts at a WWE Live Event to the team of The Miz & John Morrison.
The Longest Tag Team Title Reign In WWE History
Coming in at 483 days, Kofi Kingstons fifth reign as tag team champion alongside The New Day would be his longest. It is also the longest in company history. The previous record was held by Demolition and it clocked in at 478 days. But a reign isn’t just measured in length, it’s measured in quality of matches.
The New Days historic reign saw them defend against the likes of The Dudley Boyz (Bubba Ray Dudley & D-Von Dudley) , The Lucha Dragons (Kalisto & Sin Cara), The Usos (Jimmy Uso & Jey Uso), AJ Styles & Chris Jericho, The Club (Karl Anderson & Luke Gallows), The Bar (Cesaro & Sheamus), and The Shield (Roman Reigns & Seth Rollins).
The match quality and quality of opponents make this one of the most impressive reigns in WWE history. Kofi Kingston might have not wrestled in every one of the matches, as The New Day use the Freebird rule which lets any combination of the three defend the title.
Kofi Kingston is a sure shot for the WWE Hall of Fame, and not just for his tag team accomplishments. He is one of the best overall competitors in WWE today, and that won’t change anytime soon.
