With the new Covid variant Omicron reportedly being the most contagious and possibly weakest of the strains yet, it’s spreading quickly and the WWE was hit at live events on Sunday night.
The WWW held two live events, on at Madison Square Garden and the other in Tampa, Florida for the Raw and Smackdown brands respectively.
It was announced before both shows that some of their Superstars wouldn’t appear due to “effects of COVID-19”.
The reported list is mainly their main eventers between the two brands, and their being held out of their appearances includes those testing positive for Covid or it’s a precaution due to a wrestler’s health history.
It’s also understandable that the WWE wants to hold them out to make sure they’re safe and available for Day 1 pay-per-view on January 1, 2022.
Taking precautions
Seth Rollins was the first to say something publicly when he announced on his twitter on Sunday that he tested positive: “Merry Covid Christmas to me!!!! I LOVE FOOTBALL!!!”
It’s good that Rollins is taking this with his customary good humor and we wish him and everyone else nothing but the best.
His announcement was just the start as the news of others missing the shows came out. The names include Big E, Bobby Lashley, Seth Rollins, Becky Lynch, Bianca Belair, Zelina Vega from the MSG live event, and Roman Reigns, Shinsuke Nakamura, and Xavier Woods from the Tampa one.
Those are most of the big names in the company and ones they have been building storylines around for weeks to build them up.
Depending how things work out, this would effectively make Day 1 a bust as a PPV and the company will have to think on their feet to come up with new matches or stipulations.
We’ll get some indication of what to expect on tonight’s Raw as it’s the Go Home episode for Day 1.
It’ll be an interesting endeavor and we’re curious what they’ll come up with to fill a couple of spots, but especially Rollins since he’s the only one that officially announced he has the virus.
His dynamic will be hard to replace, but we’re sure the WWE will figure something out.
Until then, we wish each and every one on this list and in the company the best. This is unfortunate for them and the fans, but it happens.
Oddly enough, it’s fitting that every card is subject to change to cover possible issues, and this fits into that category.
