There’s been a lot of speculation for months that Vince McMahon was close to selling the WWE, and with the “streamlining” of NXT yesterday those rumors have picked up steam once again.
There’s plenty of chatter online about the possibilities, and that the moves the last couple of days were about removing Triple H’s fingerprints and people from NXT so there’s no doubt who’s running the show.
It’s all speculation, and it comes on the heels of reports that the WWE is the most viewed program on Peacock with an estimated 3 million viewers, and that they brought in 1.5 million new subscribers to the service.
If true, this would be a good selling point to NBC for the product.
Newfound speculation
The driver of this information is @wrestlingrepublic as they’re citing sources within the company.
According to them, the WWE pulled out of a deal with Disney + in Tunisia, but that could be for other reasons than NBC offering a make it or break it deal.
There’s always more layers to these dealings than we know or see, so it could be any number of things that caused the deal to fall through.
It’s got a lot of us curious as Disney was believed to be the front runner to purchase the WWE should Vince decide he wants to sell.
And if the WWE is bringing in the numbers wrestling republic claims, then it would be something NBC would definitely be interested in securing them and their content.
Improving the bottom line
It’s often been speculated that the releases for budgetary reasons were to make WWE’s bottom line look more impressive to a potential buyer.
Streamlining is something that’s standard when it comes to selling a company, and then the new owners do their evaluation and bring in their own people and so on.
What doesn’t make sense in this regard is the quantity and quality of talent the WWE let go, but if that bottom line if the real measuring stick it’s not surprising.
Jim Cornette once said on his podcast that he can see Vince selling for what Dana White sold the UFC for plus $1, and that building up his family owned business and selling it would be the type of legacy Vince would want.
Not all fans are taking this speculation well as many have been making jokes about the future of the WWE getting worse instead of better, while others are hoping it’ll usher in a new era should these rumors be true.
What do you think? Who would do better as owning the WWE, Disney or NBC?
