Lately there has been a lot of fan confusion and frustration when it comes to the WWE Intercontinental Championship. It’s current holder, Shinsuke Nakamura has barely been wrestling over the past two months. A defense against Sami Zayn was seemingly set for WWE Day One, but the show came and went without any mention of the title, champion, or challenger. However, thanks to his current partner Rick Boogs, we know have an idea of why Nakamura has not been active.
Rick Boogs Looks Forward To Teaming With Shinsuke Nakamura More Once He’s Healthy
Right now, Shinsuke Nakamura is working through an injury to his hand. While speaking with Ryan Satin on the “Out of Character” podcast, Rick Boogs would speak about his partnership with Nakamura – and why Nakamura has not been wrestling often. He had the following to say.
“I think it’s inevitable that it happens,” Boogs would reply when asked about a singles run. “I’m not looking to rush it by any means because I feel like me and Shin have not even scratched the surface yet of what we can do together, combining our forces. We’re just getting cooking here. We’ve only had a couple of tag matches together and he suffered a hand injury that has kept him out for close to two months now, it seems like.
I’m looking forward to him being healthy and cleared so we can kick some tail. From there, down the road, we’ll branch off, but I’m in no rush with that. There is a new approach, pairing up the seasoned vets with new up and comers and it’s obviously for a reason. It helps get more exposure, TV time, and valuable insight. I don’t think he’d be as willing to help me out if I wasn’t with him, Strong Style Shred. What’s his incentive to help me?”
Should Nakamura Have Been Stripped Of His Championship?
This does beg a question however. Why has WWE not stripped Nakamura of this championship? Right now, Smackdown is basically without one of it’s two main singles championships. Nakamura would have been known to be injured during the “Twelve Days Of Christmas” Gauntlet match, and instead of naming a #1 contender, this match could have decided a new champion. Not only would that make for better stakes, it would also make for better TV.
Right now, WWE has a roster full of talent eager to prove themselves – and putting the Intercontinental Championship on a Cesaro or Ricochet would quickly turn this back into the workhorse championship that fans remember it as.
Should WWE strip Nakamura of his title? Do you want him to remain champion while injured? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
