The Attitude Era in the WWE was one that had all sorts of different gimmicks, and Vince McMahon was always looking for a new angle to use and he reportedly pitched the idea to Scotty 2 Hotty and Brian Christopher about them marrying on Raw.
One example was the tag team of Billy Gunn and Chuck Palumbo dubbed Billy and Chuck. They were a heel tag team with overtly homosexual tones and they even went so far as a commitment ceremony on Smackdown.
Billy and Chuck stopped the ceremony, claiming it was a publicity stunt gone too far, but according to Scotty 2 Hotty, Vince McMahon wanted to have a homosexual wedding prior to this, and he approached Too Cool about it.
Opening up
Since his release as a coach in NXT in November 2021, Scotty appeared on Talk is Jericho and he broached the topic of Vince approaching them about getting married on Raw.
Scotty talked about how his conversation with Vince at catering at WrestleMania 14 led to his and Brian Christopher’s names being changed to Scotty 2 Hotty and Too Sexy, and how they came across as an ambiguous gay couple.
Not bad considering the conversation started off with Scotty thanking him for adding him to WrestleMania.
Some time later when he next talked with Vince, Vince had another idea and he pitched to Scotty about he and Christopher getting married on Raw.
Special thanks to Inside the Ropes for the transcript.
“He comes up to us, and I’ve barely had a conversation with him since the coffee at WrestleMania, and he said, ‘You know, we’ve seen tag teams come and go over the years, but we’ve never seen tag teams come together for life. I want to do a wedding where you guys marry each other on Monday Night Raw. We’ll have all the other guys on the outside in tuxedos clapping.’
“I’m like 23, and I’m thinking, he had just become the heel promoter with the whole Bret Hart thing, so in mind, I’m trying to justify that I can do this. A year down the road, we could say the heel promoter made us do this, and we come out as babyfaces. I’m trying to justify every idea in my own head.
“Brian just wouldn’t do it. He had wrestled for his dad in Memphis for years and years and had a solid paycheck there, so I’m sure he had a backup if he had to go back there. He flat out refused to do the tag team wedding, which Billy and Chuck later did. We said no. It must have been May of ‘99 when we did a backstage pretape saying that Too Much was dead, and we’re now known as Too Cool.”
There’s plenty of arguments for them to have done it and not to, with the biggest against them doing it was Billy and Chuck as at the time homosexual characters were nearly always heels and made to look foolish more times than not.
Maybe they would’ve been handled differently than Billy and Chuck were, but we’ll never know. There is the missed opportunity to be trail blazers, but there’s no going back.
