Monday Night Raw is upon us yet again everyone. The next – final? – chapter in the Rey Mysterio vs. Andrade feud comes to us tonight! And it does so in the form of a ladder match! Ladies and gentlemen my name is Jordan Huie, we are here at the Overtimer and tonight, as usual, I’ll be with you to give you the live recap and results from the show as they come! Just days away from the Royal Rumble now, we have some unique stuff on tap for tonight. So let’s get to it!
Ladder Match for the WWE United States Championship: Andrade (c) vs. Rey Mysterio
Andrade defeated Rey for the US title back in Madison Square Garden last month. A rare house show title change, the match took place the night after Christmas. Not long after, the two of them squared off on Raw, where Andrade retained his title over the legendary luchador. But Rey Mysterio is not one to give up and he’s continued to pursue Andrade.
This feud is based mainly around two things. One is that Andrade believes he is the right man to represent Latinos across the world, whereas Rey thinks he’s not a good enough role model for such a thing. The other facet is the fate of Humberto Carrillo, a promising up and comer that Andrade viciously attacked at the end of a grueling Gauntlet match. It’s been five weeks since Andrade drove Humberto’s boyish dimples into exposed concrete with a Hammerlock DDT, and we’ve still yet to see him return. He’s not forgotten though as Rey is still vowing vengeance.
These two have had many great TV matches over the past year or so, but it really comes to a boil here tonight. Because this time around, the US title will be decided in a ladder match!
I don’t have to tell any wrestling fan that this is a storied and cherished stip.
It’s been a fan favorite match type since the 90s, and is particularly hype when high fliers are involved. That’s good news considering that Rey Mysterio, even after all these years, is a transcendent high flier. For many years he was considered the best in the game, and to this day is capable of astounding, innovative feats.
This is sure to be a fun one, and a crucial one as well. It’s hard to see Rey getting another shot if he loses here… unless, of course, he puts his mask on the line for it. And that’s an idea that’s been floated around for years. Generally the assumption has been that Andrade and Rey could have a mask vs. hair match. But mask vs. title would work as well. Speculation about this picked up again after Andrade ripped off Rey’s mask last week.
All that said, I have to think that Andrade retains here. The long term goal here is likely to have Humberto Carrillo come back and be the one to take the gold off of him down the line.
