Vince McMahon, over the years, has been said to not get some gimmicks. This does seem to end up with the gimmick being changed or going the wrong way. A couple of these include Aleister Black, who signed with AEW. Another one that Vince didn’t get at the beginning was Riddle, formerly known as Matt Riddle.
Riddle’s gimmick has gone through some changes, from him just riding around on a scooter backstage to becoming a tag team with Randy Orton. In an interview, Riddle goes into detail about what Vince originally thought of his gimmick.
What Riddle had to say
Speaking with Ryan Satin recently, Riddle had this to say:
“At first, they didn’t get it. Nobody got it. Vince didn’t get it. He’s like, ‘You’re a goof,’ and I was like, ‘Well, I’m a goof that can, like, kick your ass, dude.’ I know I’m goofy, but when I get in that ring, I turn it up. At first, they didn’t see it, but now they see the in-ring ability with the entertainment side of it. There will probably be a time where they’ll ask me to be serious, and I can be serious too. I just like the range I’ll be able to have because I got to do this at the very beginning and probably at the end of my career – I’ll get to be very serious. The fans, the audience, everybody that I work with will be able to see the range of emotions and characters I can play.”
The terrible birds
Looking through Riddle’s gimmick, the tag team work Orton works. However, there is a massive standout that doesn’t look great. This being the CGI birds that get projected on the screen at every entrance. Vince is apparently very happy with this, even though it has been highly criticized. If these were to disappear, it wouldn’t be the worst thing to happen.
