Alexander Volkanovski is tired of winning against the same guy over and over. He is full of being a champion of the Featherweight division only since there is no one out there worthy to challenge him.
Past Saturday, the 15th of July, the UFC promotion made an announcement that they will ‘pair’ Charles Oliveira, the crownless lightweight champion, and Islam Makhachev. The mini-war will happen at the UFC 280 event in Abu Dhabi.
Charles Oliveira Against Islam Makhachev Is Official! – Alexander Volkanovski Pledges To Fight The Winner Of The Bout
Now, the undefeated Macedonian, Volkanovski will seek a chance to hold two titles and join the fighters that are champions in two divisions. And being lightweight is not something new for Volkanovski. In his starting days in MMA, he was competing in lightweight for quite some time. He was successful as well.
After receiving the news of the arranging of the lightweight title match Alexander the Macedonian took to Twitter to announce his plans.
“I got the winner!” – he retweeted UFC’s post and made a short revelation of his plans.
Volkanovski has recently won a fight and marked an additional title defense to his accomplishment list. He pulled out a win against Max Holloway for the third time in a row and defended the title by winning with a unanimous decision. Seeing that there is no one that can match him in featherweight after the bout he announces that he is planning to obtain an additional title.
He gets praises from his long time nemesis and opponent Max Holloway as well. He realized that he will be stuck in 2nd place for quite some time so he decided to praise the Volk for his skills.
“I’m still up 2-0 on knockdowns for trilogy. Prob gonna need a 4th to settle this.” Holloway states. “Just playing. Congrats to my brother Alexander Volkanovski. Go get that lightweight strap. You earned the shot. You’re No. 1[pound-for-pound right now.”
And it is quite obvious that Alexander Volkanovski is eyeballing the lightweight title. Also, the UFC president Dana White seems not to have any problem with it. He seems open to allowing this for happening.
However, we might need to wait for some time before seeing this reach fruition. Volkanovski broke his thumb during his most recent title defense and now might need some longer recovery time than usual. This is at least several months. And this timeline seems to be perfect for him. The featherweight champion will recover from the injury on time. He will be able to start training just in time to prepare for acquiring the additional title. Additional to this is that Dana White is planning of arranging an interim title bout between Yair Rodriguez and Josh Emmett following the UFC Long Island main event.
