Dark Side of the Ring composer Andrew Gordon MacPherson sat with The Ten Count podcast to discuss season four of the show which will feature a Marty Jannetty episode. We know Dark Side of the Ring for delving into dark, seedy, and tragic stories in wrestling history while featuring those who were there and dramatic reenactments.
Dark Side of the Ring Composer Discusses Upcoming Marty Jannetty Episode
The show took the often questionable actions and stories in the business and turned them into something that has been mostly well-received. Then you have Marty Jannetty: a former WWE superstar who showed a lot of ability and team work in the ring. Then his career constantly went down and had its big pitfalls.
On the Marty Jannetty episode, MacPherson said that while he hasn’t checked out the finished episode, it will be a good episode as the crew spent “a good deal of time with Marty in the episode and his closest friends and people who have known him for a long time.”
He also said that it will be a picture of two different Jannettys—the young one and the older one living with the actions and decisions of young Marty.
MacPherson guarantees that the episode will “send some shockwaves through.” That will depend on if Marty Jannetty drops something big and questionable on those who are still active in the business. Jannetty shared some of his dirt on Facebook, so you’ll hear it in his voice and probably from others privy to other details.
Behavioral problems, failing to actually deal with them, and a legal incident resulted in Jannetty being released from WWE in 1994 and again in 1996.
Between May 1993 and January 1994, he won win the Intercontinental title from former The Rockers partner Shawn Michaels and the World Tag Team titles with 1-2-3 Kid.
This was the peak period for his career and also when he was still getting opportunities in WWE. After that he floated through ECW, WCW and eventually the indies during the 90s and 2000s.
There were brief returns to WWE throughout the late 2000s but his legal issues prevented him from being on the road with the company.
His constant run-ins with the law became the bigger thing he’s been remembered for in recent history. There’s him killing a man at 13 because he believed that the man was going to rape him.
He also claimed to have dumped the body in a river in his hometown. Jannetty would later double down on the killing saying that it was self-defense but didn’t mean to kill him—acknowledging that he was involved in a death and covered it up.
The story only came up as a warning to his girlfriend about hurting him. Marty Jannetty would later mention killing others in the post. The retired Rocker’s public statements were later floated to the Columbus police’s cold case division.
Jannetty would later say the post was part of a scrapped wrestling angle as the investigation began.
