The long awaited debut of Gable Steveson in a WWE ring may take longer than originally expected after the WWE signed him to a multi-year deal that included a scaled back NCAA competition schedule.
As an Olympic gold medalist and NCAA champion, Gable fits the WWE mold to a T and brings back memories of a young Kurt Angle Brock Lesnar, and more that followed a similar path.
He wasn’t expected in a WWE ring for a while, hence the deal where he continued to wrestle, but there’s been reports that he’s contemplating returning for his final season of eligibility despite graduating.
He could return for the second semester of Minnesota’s Golder Gophers 2022-2023 season as reported in Pioneer Press.
Walking away?
Gable retired from amateur wrestling in grand style by leaving his wrestling shoes on the mat following hit second consecutive national championship in the 285 pound weight division.
He established himself as a premier talent and one of the best Golden Gophers in history and looked forward to fulfilling his childhood dream of joining the WWE, where he was drafted to Raw in the previous draft.
But it looks like there could be a change of plans.
Brandon Eggum, Minnesota’s wrestling coach, shared his thoughts with Pioneer Press.
“I know he would like to wrestle, and he loves competing. Really, it comes down to making that work.”
“It would have to be something he works out with the WWE and Vince McMahon. Those details … it hasn’t gotten that far. It’s one thing if he said, ‘No way, I’m not doing it.’ … But he has the eligibility, he’s capable and he has interest in doing it.
“We want to make it as easy on him as possible.”
In control
It’s obvious Vince McMahon and the WWE see the potential in Gable to become one of the greats and he’s appeared at WrestleMania 38 and previously had Chad Gable mention him in a heel promo.
But it looks like Gable’s in the driver’s seat for the most part, and if he chooses to return to fulfill his eligibility it’ll be an interested decision in many ways.
As of now, he left at the peak of his career, and while there doesn’t appear to be a reason for him not to continue his success. But that doesn’t mean something won’t happen like an injury or him losing.
That would be something Vince could be mindful of as it’d dilute the build for his WWE debut or send it off the rails if he’s injured at all.
There are plenty of moving parts and possibilities in this decision, and we’re looking forward to what Gable decides.
