Colby Covington, never one to miss an opportunity to jeer from the sidelines, dropped a video of Dustin Poirier on social media this week. In the video, Poirier, wearing protective equipment, drops his sparring partner. Colby posted the video below with the caption:
Covington tries and fails to shame Poirier ahead of UFC 264
The guy wearing full nerf gear head to toe to protect his face and his feelings is Poirier. The guy with no headgear, wrestling credentials or brain cells left is “khabib.” @DustinPoirier Good guy? Bad guy? You be the judge #AndNew #UFC264
Colby recently accused Poirier of not being as nice a guy as he seems. This is a pretty bizarre statement to make, considering that Covington does everything within his power to play MMA’s ultimate Trump-loving heel. In a sport where the explicit goal is to beat up another human being, “nice guys” are few and far between.
Fighters in preparation for big matches often train while wearing protective gear to guard against injury or abrasions in the lead up to the fight.
Jorge Masvidal, who trains at American Top Team alongside Dustin Poirier, and leapt to the defense of his teammate.
Gamebred, a former Covington teammate, entered the fray, encouraging Colby to post another video. “Why don’t you post the video of @DustinPoirier dropping you with a body shot? Always hating on people with power #supernecessary?”
Covington’s attempt to tarnish “Diamond” Dustin Poirier fell on largely deaf ears. Most fight fans are aware that hard sparring is a vital part of pre-fight training, and that knockdowns, summissions, and occasional injuries are part of the game. It would be absurd to expect a top-tier fighter like Poirier, in the lead-up to a title fight, to do anything but train hard.
Colby Covington is gunning for a title fight himself, and will, leading up to it, engage in the sort of hard sparring and “nerf” gear he’s shaming Poirier for. Covington has made no secret of his desire for a rematch with Kamaru Usman, who knocked Colby out in the final round of their last fight. This was Usman’s first title defense, a win streak which the “Nigerian Nightmare” has defended to this day.
Do you think Covington is right, and Dustin Poirier is a “bad guy” for dropping his sparring partner? Is this kind of training enough for Poirier to seal the deal and defeat McGregor yet again this Saturday night? Let us know in the comments.
