Okay, putting Dolph Ziggler and the best in the same sentence is a little confusing to many simply because he gets mauled just about every time he gets in the ring. Lately, he’s been unable to control his mouth, and it’s led to him taking a lot more punishment than he needs to.
Will his gimmick change?
Nah. Why should it?
According to some reports/rumors online, he’s considered the best by the powers that be in the WWE and for a simple reason: he can make anyone look good.
Think of it this way, why did he end up facing Goldberg after we were teased by Michaels?
Again, the thought process seemed to be that after the disastrous Super Showdown in Saudi Arabia, Goldberg needed to redeem himself. Ziggler’s talent for selling what’s done to him made him a great opportunity. Also, add in that he’s far lighter than the Undertaker and less likely to be dropped on his head during a Jackhammer also makes him a good candidate.
In the end, whether those rumors are true or not, he put Goldberg over big time. Few play the heel better than Ziggler and we love seeing him get pummeled for it. So, continually challenging Goldberg led to three spears and we ate it up. Goldberg left the ring looking like he was still in his prime adding to his streak.
History bears this out
Go back a little further to his feud with Kofi Kingston, and those were the best matches of Kingston’s heavyweight title reign so far, especially the cage match.
The Miz is another proven commodity that’s been hot and cold recently, but after running his mouth on Raw, Ziggler put the Miz over big time.
The measure of a great wrestler isn’t just what they can do in the ring or if they win or lose championships, but how they work with their compatriots and put them over when needed. Ziggler does that and more, and honestly, giving him a championship for a while would be a pretty good reward. He has earned it.
Of course, if he is successful, he’ll have to tweak his “What about me?” and “You don’t have the guts!” gimmick a little bit, but if anyone can do it, he can.
