Super Letdown: Fanmade Changes
When we think of pay-per-views we think of grand spectacles, of awesome matches the wrestlers have worked so hard to deliver, and just having a really awesome time.
This one, while an entertaining pay-per-view overall, had a couple of clunkers. The biggest being the opening match between Rollins and Corbin. It’s important to open the event with a great match to set the tone, not a championship match that’ll be more known for a referee getting in Corbin’s face and most likely creating another Dangerous Danny Davis story arc (This is probably showing some of our ages here. Lol). Seriously, the referee (who has remained nameless so far) is well built and got into Corbin’s face, and Corbin blamed him for losing the match afterwards, so that is such a strong potential rivalry.
Besides that, what else happened? Rollins took some punishment and we were reminded a hundred times about his hurt ribs. Gotcha.
Rollins finally managed to fight back against Lesner, giving the rivalry some credibility. Gotcha.
Lesner has yet to cash in his MITB contract, extending the story arc indefinitely. Again, gotcha.
Here’s the thing: So, why should the fans care?
To be honest, love him or hate him, Rollins has worked hard to sell himself as champion and had a tremendous match against AJ Styles at MITB. There’s no arguing against that. The problem seems to be that the fanbase is split, with more seeming to not be buying in. For whatever reason, he seems to fall flat with a lot of people.
Then when you throw in the Shane McMahon/Roman Reigns rivalry (which was a surprisingly good match) and you have two stale acts that may work if they were switched around.
Random thought, but what if Shane costs Rollins the title and Reigns gets it?
That would give the WWE’s arguably biggest star top billing and allow Rollins to possibly turn heel out of his jealousy (just have a feeling he’d be a better heel than babyface), and Brock Lesner can focus elsewhere for new untilled ground like a rivalry with Kofi Kingston, since brands don’t seem to matter anymore (Yay!) and assuming Lesner would stick around after that.

Imagine Rollins and McIntyre chasing the gold. McIntyre could be the wild card between the two, biding his time to strike or even feuding with Samoa Joe. It may not be the top title, but what how much fun would it be to see these two warring with each other for a few weeks? Randy Orton could also fit into any of these scenarios or something completely different like targeting Kingston and having a rivalry with Lesner for the top contender. After shafting one another a few times, a triple threat match could be pretty cool.
While these are just quick brainstorming ideas (and granted, that may not be the best. lol) they’d eliminate or cut back on two of the fans least favorite heels: Lesner and Shane McMahon. Seriously, Shane is awesome, but he can’t play the bad guy nearly as well as Vince could. Maybe it’s time for the McMahons to step back and focus on managing their product instead of being a part of so many story arcs? If Lesner buys into something new, he could make some serious waves for various titles by keeping a viable threat out there.
One thing is for sure, the talent is there. It just needs some kind of jolt to get it moving again. Considering Triple H, Orton, the Undertaker, and Goldberg have shown they can still change the feel of the room just by facing each other without wrestling, something’s got to give. Can’t rely on the old guard forever.
