At the Royal Rumble, Drew McIntyre punched his ticket to Wrestlemania and is in line to face Brock Lesnar for the WWE Championship. Fan reaction to his victory has been great, and WWE is on the verge of creating a major star. This could have happened to another star however. Ever since Paul Heyman started working backstage at Monday Night RAW, he has had a few projects to try and make into stars. One of these is Aleister Black.
Aleister Black Was Strongly Considered To Face Brock Lesnar
While Drew McIntrye matches up physically with Brock Lesnar, making him a threat, Aleister Black could have proven to be a threat as well. His striking ability is both lethal and legitimate, being a trained kickboxer. He has been treated very well since his debut on the main roster, where he was initially in a tag team with Ricochet. Since going solo, he has not wrestled often, but has yet to be defeated in a singles match since leaving NXT.
His last televised singles loss was at NXT TakeOver: Phoenix where he failed to reclaim the NXT Championship from Tommaso Ciampa. Since then, he has defeated the likes of Roderick Strong, Akira Tozawa, Shelton Benjamin, Buddy Murphy, Cesaro, and Sami Zayn. So despite not being a constant fixture on TV, he has been very well protected. His Black Mass kick is possibly the most protected finisher in all of WWE.
Will Black Get A Main Event Push In 2020?
The feeling is that at this point in time, McIntyre was the more over of the two so the decision was made for him to go to Wrestlemania over Aleister Black, but the confidence in him to be considered for this role is reassuring. The year is still young, and it is only a matter of time before he wins championship glory. The United States Championship is in an unsure state at this time, and Black would make for a fantastic champion. He could bring back the open challenge, as he always wants to fight someone. Being champion will bring challengers right to him, and all will fall to Black Mass. He could also be a winner of Money In The Bank, which could be his path to the WWE Championship in the summer.
Regardless of how he gets there, it seems like he will be a huge star in the new year. If this works out or not is yet to be seen, but he’s certainly got the potential.
