The rumor mill on social media is alive and well as more and more rumors are churning out every day. One of the most prominent is that Goldberg will defeat “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt at Super Showdown and reclaim the Universal Championship.
Can’t blame fans for putting out their dream matches, especially when all signs pointed to Roman Reigns and Goldberg meeting at Super Showdown after Reigns took a shot at him.
The plan may be changing
Let’s say the WWE has Goldberg win the Universal Championship. The reaction will be… mixed.
The Goldberg fans will love it, but with the Fiend being one of, if not the most popular superstars, how will that go over?
Okay, setting aside the fact McMahon will love it if we boo the roof off like at Hell in a Cell, let’s say it goes over well.
Goldberg will become another Brock Lesnar.
He’ll show up here and there, cut a quick promo, maybe take a bump or two, but nothing serious until WrestleMania, where he’ll face Roman Reigns.
Reigns will be the company’s top face by then, so he’ll win the belt in an “epic” battle that’ll consist of three moves from each and end at roughly five minutes as the opening match.
Why the opening match? It’s meant to draw people into buying and watching the pay-per-view.
And to be honest…
This is not a good plan
And it’ll all start if Goldberg is to defeat “The Fiend” Bray Wyatt.
Bill Goldberg was lightning in a bottle in the late 90s, early 2000s, but since he’s been more of an attraction than not. He comes in to make the WWE a boatload of cash, then he fades back into his life.
It’s the typical Legends deal, and that would make this one of the worst mistakes in recent memory.
We continue calling for something new, of seeing new talent than the same old, same old. Yet we’re constantly being teased (or tormented) with having older retired wrestlers come in to inject new life into the company.
The fact Vince McMahon feels he need to keep bringing back so many Legends to inject life says a lot about the current product. The current crop of wrestlers would be mid-card level during the Golden or Attitude Era. They’re simply not as good in the ring or on the mic as their predecessors, and we see that.
Contrary to what many may think, wrestling fans aren’t stupid. We do see these things and that’s the main reason the WWE has been losing so much money lately. They keep trying to recapture lighting in a bottle, and they’re failing.
Sure, it’s cool to see Goldberg and others every now and then. It reminds us of the glory days by bringing our nostalgia to the fore.
But with no indication, publicly at least, that Goldberg wants to come back full time, this has disaster written all over it.
Not to mention it’d cut Bray Wyatt’s awesome effort off at the knees. It’s bad enough he’s expected to lose the Universal title to Reigns at WrestleMania, which will probably start the Reigns backlash all over again, but to Goldberg at this stage of his career?
Why it has to be a rumor
This is just full of too many chances to go wrong and go wrong in a big way.
First, as mentioned above, it’ll cut off Wyatt’s character and go a long way to destroying his mystique. This is where they should introduce a new character that is as strong as the Fiend, but isn’t as dark. Basically, this would be a perfect feud for Samoa Joe and/or Braun Strowman to entrench themselves as main eventers.
Fans love both, and as much as I love Strowman, I have to say Samoa Joe would be better. Unfortunately, he’s on the wrong show. Not that it’s stopped the WWE before.
The fact remains that, as mentioned above, the WWE is lacking the type of wrestler like a John Cena, Steve Austin, The Rock, and HBK. They don’t have anyone aside from Wyatt, really, that’s really captured out attention and held it.
However McMahon decides to go with this angle, he’s going to repeat past mistakes and hope they turn out differently (see the definition of insanity).
Pushing Reigns so hard last time caused people to stop watching WWE, and Seth Rollins’ attempt at being the promotion’s face drove more away. So, putting the Universal Championship back on Reigns makes sense because why?
All of this could be for nothing as nothing has changed. Wyatt will probably beat Goldberg at Super Showdown, and then lose to Reigns at WrestleMania.
Time for us to sit back and watch if it’s going to be a train wreck or work out.
