Ruh-ROH, Joey Mercury’s crusade against Ring Of Honor rages on via Twitter, as he has posted a conversation with Ring of Honor General Manager, Greg Gilleland where they discussed a few key talents within the company. These include Flip Gordan, Marty Scurll, and former ROH Champion Matt Taven. The texts are dated for June 26th, 2019 .
Flip Gordan
Flip Gordan is about as solid as a high flying talent can get, with strong fundamentals and mat-work to back it up making him a very well rounded performer, one of Ring Of Honors best and most underutilized. He had sent a text to Joey Mercury complaining that ROH continues to run venues which are much too large for the company to fill in their current state. Mercury forwarded this complaint to Greg Gilleland, who placed the blame on performers like Flip Gordan not being big enough draws to fill seats.
Gordan is the type of talent that if you invested into him and built him up, he would easily become a star. Instead, in typical ROH fashion, his potential has been squandered, and he is fixing to leave the company as soon as he is able to. Mercury said it best in this exchange “Flip is a talent, not a promoter.”, Gordan was easily fulfilling his role in the company, but sometimes you can only work with what you’re given.
Matt Taven & Marty Scurll
At the joint show between Ring Of Honor & New Japan Pro Wrestling back on April 6, 2019, at Madison Square Garden in New York City, the ROH main event consisted of a Three-way ladder match for the ROH World Championship which saw then Champion Jay Lethal defend against Matt Taven & Marty Scurll. Fans were shocked, and not in a good way, when Matt Taven became world champion, and he would hold onto the title for 174 days, defending against the likes of Flip Gordan, Jeff Cobb, Mark Haskins, and Alex Shelley. Taven is a very solid worker, but it was akin to Jinder Mahals time as WWE Champion, no one wanted it.
The posted texts reveal that Greg only made the call to put the belt on Taven because “We knew Taven would stay, but we couldn’t get him over.” Marty Scrull was already fixing to leave the company, so I can understand being apprehensive, but if they had Scrull win the title, have some exciting matches as champion, then have Matt Taven win the belt as Marty was fixing to leave, maybe people would have cared about Taven.
I sincerally hope Ring Of Honor can turn their fortunes around in 2020. This has been a horrible year for their product and even worse backstage from the sound of things. They need to make some major overhauls, or they will fall even deeper into obscurity in the coming years, before ceasing to exist. It hurts to see what was once my absolute favorite wrestling promotion fall this hard, and I hope to see a day I can provide positive coverage on them.
