Jordan Huie of the Overtimer here and we are closing in on a pretty damn crazy weekend of wrestling. The long talked about NXT main roster invasion has finally happened over the past few weeks, and we’ve been led to a surreal couple of shows. First we have NXT TakeOver WarGames 2019. It’s a big show, in spite of only having four matches due to the length expected from the double WarGames encounters. I’ll be doing a match by match preview for the whole card, so let’s get to it!
A late addition was made to the show’s card over the last 24 hours. A pre-show match was added, and for the first time, will be airing live ahead of tonight’s NXT TakeOver WarGames! This is a break from the norm as in the past, when NXT filmed it’s episodes in batches, they didn’t tape the show after TakeOvers. Instead, it became a recap show, with a handful of matches that were taped ahead of TakeOver itself. But now, with NXT being live every week, that’s changed. Now we’re actually airing the match as it happens, and that’s fine by me as it’s a good one!
Isiah “Swerve” Scott vs. Angel Garza
These are the two hottest prospects from the NXT Breakout Tournament – with all due respects to Cameron Grimes & Bronson Reed. They are each extremely talented, charismatic young athletes that have been getting themselves over in a hurry. In different ways, they’ve each established themselves as smooth and cool both in their work and demeanor. Popular with the girls as well! Very similar appeal even though they’re very much different, which is real interesting.
Angel Garza and Isaiah “Swerve” Scott have managed to stand out even among the incredible talent all over the black and gold roster. It’s great to see them being given a shot in a match like this, and hopefully they’ll be able to strut their stuff here. There was part of me that wanted to see Swerve Scott get onto Team Ciampa’s WarGames team honestly, that’s how much of a clear star babyface in the making he is.
Both of these two seem like very likely candidates to be either Cruiserweight champion or North American champion. To me this is quite the significant one as far as momentum goes. It’s not super easy to pick a winner, given that they’re very much on the same level. But it should perhaps be noted that every champion aside from Lio Rush is a heel, and Garza has already had a shot at Rush recently. So it generally makes more sense to give momentum to babyfaces.
With that in mind, I’m going with Swerve Scott.
NXT TakeOver WarGames 2019 will be airing this Saturday on the WWE Network at 7 PM Eastern Time, 6 Central. There will also be a half hour pre-show leading into the event. The show emanates from the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois. I’m Jordan Huie of the Overtimer, and I will be giving a live play by play of the show as it happens.
