We are two hours into this episode of Monday Night Raw that I’m currently covering. And I’ve gotta say, this has been a night full of surprises so far. Not least of which what we just saw occur.
AJ Styles was meant to defend the WWE United States title against Humberto Carrillo tonight. But before the match could occur, the OC attacked and destroyed him, and he ended up stretchered out. Whilst this avoided that challenger, it opened the floodgates. Ricochet, Randy Orton, Drew McIntyre & Rey Mysterio all emerged to challenge AJ and take up Humberto’s spot.
This led to a fatal four way match between all of them, a wild one to be certain. After some great action, it was Rey Mysterio who took the win and then squared off with AJ Styles immediately thereafter.
As one might expect, it was another mighty fine encounter but one with plenty of twists and turns. The OC found themselves ejected from the match halfway through. Rey would hit a 619, but AJ’s bump from it ended up taking out the referee. This led to the OC coming back and swarming in on Rey, only for Randy Orton of all people to make the save! He took out Gallows and Anderson, and nailed AJ with an RKO, helping secure the victory for Rey Mysterio!
Thus, Rey Mysterio is now the WWE United States Champion!
Rey held the gold earlier in this year, after getting a shock, somewhat flukey win over Samoa Joe at Stomping Grounds. This one I’d wager holds a little more weight, as it follows a grueling performance. Pretty much the whole second hour of Raw was dedicated to Rey Mysterio vying for the US title tonight.
He celebrated with his son Dominic after the fact. This leaves us with much to look forward to; will AJ demand a rematch? Will Orton think Rey owes him? Will Humberto be bitter over Rey taking his shot?
