Last night, a familar face emerged on Smackdown Live, that being The Celtic Warrior, Sheamus. Having been out of action since Wrestlemania, the landscape has changed a lot since we last saw Sheamus in action. What can we expect to see from him over the next few months?
Sheamus Trophy Case Is Missing A Few Championships
Sheamus is a very decorated champion in WWE, being a 4 time world champion (1 with the World Heavyweight Championship & 3 with the WWE Championship), a 2 time United States Champion, and a 5 time tag team champion as part of The Bar. He also won King of The Ring in 2010, the Royal Rumble in 2012, and Money in the Bank in 2015, making him the second man behind Edge to win all of those accolades.
That being said, there is a notable belt missing from his collection, that being the Intercontential Championship, currently held by The King of Strong Style, Shinsuke Nakamura. A feud between these two heavy strikers could produce some fantastic matches. It would be a good start to what Sheamus promised in his return promo, that he would ravage Smackdown Live. He has also never got a chance to hold The Universal Championship, currently held by ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt, but I wouldn’t blame him for targeting Nakamura instead.
Getting The Bar Back Together
Another route WWE could go, is take the easy way out and simply put Sheamus back with his tag team partner, Cesaro. The Bar are 5 time tag team champions, have had some absoulutely fantastic matches with the likes of The Hardys & The New Day, and while it wouldn’t be the most exciting route for Sheamus to take, few fans would be mad to see one of the best tag teams in recent years reunite. Cesaro has been floundering as a singles star once again, so it would be to his benefit as well.
The Smackdown tag team division is currently lacking depth, consisting of The New Day, The Revival, Roode & Ziggler, and Heavy Machinery as teams people can take somewhat seriously in matches. The Bar would certainly help bring another legitimate team to the division, but we saw Cesaro tag with Nakamura last night against The New Day, so that could be a new team they’ll use going forward.
Regardless of what the plan is for Sheamus going forward, I’m just glad to see him back in action. At 41 and with rumors of long lasting back injuries, it’s unclear how many more years he has left in the ring, so I’m gonna try my best to enjoy whatever WWE gives us with him, because it could very well be his final run at glory.
