Finally. Finally, Seth Rollins’ went Kurt Angle heel to complete his turn to the heel side.
Okay, that was corny, but considering Rollins turning heel is what we’ve been begging for, it’s worth it. For months now, fans have wanted, begged for Seth Rollins to turn heel.
It shows that maybe Vince McMahon is listening after all.
Well, let’s not get a head of ourselves. The Lana Rusev storyline is still a thing, so…
Back to the good things.
The opening rant by Rollins, pointing the finger at everyone else but him for Raw’s shellacking at Survivor Series, was missing the “It’s true, it’s true” Angle mantra, he hit the same points perfectly. It was one of those moments where you know something’s going to go down, it’s just a matter of how and when.
To be honest, when Rollins first stepping into the ring, my thought was, “God no.” It didn’t take long for him to change my mind and bring a nostalgic smile to my face.
Rollins was born to be a heel
Seriously, there are some people that are born for a certain type of work. He was obviously born to be a professional wrestler, but more than that, he’s a heel through and through.
From the way he’s conducted himself on social media by offering to compare bank accounts to his comments about AEW being minor league, he bleeds heel. It oozes out of his pores in so many ways.
The best part about this is by most accounts, he’s a cool guy. He’s someone any of us could be friends with and not even bat an eye. Ever notice how it’s the nicest people that make the best bad guys? It’s like they finally get to have fun or something.
Sami Zayn influence
This is where the whole emulating Kurt Angle takes an interesting turn.
Despite Rollins’ doing a great job of selling himself and channeling Kurt Angle, I wonder if it was intentional that he sounded more like Sami Zayn than anything?
What’s funny is, Zayn’s the perfect one to compliment the Angle portion of Rollins’ new persona.
While many fans aren’t a fan of Zayn for various reasons, he’s one of the best with the microphone in hand, so it makes sense for Rollins to take a little from him. Zayne may have helped him behind the scenes with it.
The downside to this is Rollins didn’t come through as threatening or dangerous like Kurt Angle. That could be why the AOP joined him.
Rollins new faction?
The AOP could be siding with Rollins, or they may have just wanted to show him what they were capable of. Either way, they left him alone after decimating Kevin Owens.
Having them come out was unexpected, but maybe we should’ve expected something like that in hindsight. Whenever anyone has a meltdown like Rollins, some of those they call out show up to help or demonstrate their skills.
Of course, this doesn’t matter as it was unexpected and got the chorus of boos, putting AOP over as top heels. Rollins stomping Owens twice cemented him in that role, and for the first time in months Rollins got the reaction he wanted from fans.
Rollins cracked
The overall picture’s kinda funky depending on how you look at it. Rollins may have flubbed his lines during his opening rant, exchanging I’s for we and so on. Or he may have done it intentionally.
Personally, I think it’s his character. He’s playing it like he’s been trying so hard to be good that he’s finally cracked. Kevin Owens’ interview before the match solidified the angle, It also makes sense as it’s something Rollins is probably going though for real, as he’s been busting his rump to sell his good guy image and we just weren’t buying it.
He even admitted it’s frustrating, but that was on Corey Graves’ podcast, so it could just be work.
Whatever the reason, we all have our perspectives and opinions on it, and that’s what makes this fun. It’s going to an interesting ride now that Rollins has returned to what he does best.
