Luke Harper getting his release from WWE has been the talk of the wrestling world, the biggest departure from WWE since Jon Moxley. With a non-compete clause in effect, Harper is unable to appear on TV until about March 2020, but that doesn’t mean he won’t receive offers before then. He could make a splash anywhere he goes, but it seems someone high up in AEW is interested.
Cody Rhodes On Luke Harper
This is of course, Cody Rhodes. He had this to say when asked about Luke Harper in an interview “He would be great as part of AEW. He’s a name that when you hear they’ve asked for their release, you definitely think about that and the next steps, for sure. I think he’s going to flourish with what he does next, he’s very special.”
Luke Harper would be a big name for AEW to go after, being a high level worker of large stature, something they lack in their roster outside of maybe Luchasarus. The athletic hoss is an incredibly fun role, and Luke Harper is a trailblazer of that road. With Cody having some serious sway in AEW, Harper could find a home there. No doubt all major promotions are going to be offering him a spot, so it’ll be interesting to see what 2020 will hold for him.
AEW Needs To Be Careful
While they haven’t went full TNA and signed every WWE release, they need to make sure they don’t build that reputation. Someone like Shawn Spears joining their roster early and getting spotlight is fine, and they would have been fools to not sign Jon Moxley, but they can’t take anyone WWE doesn’t want. I hope that if Harper does show up in AEW, he doesn’t cut a classic ‘I was held back in the other place’ type promo. People know it to be true and its effective, but also such a cliche. They haven’t done this yet to my knowledge, and I hope it will stay that way.
