It’s Monday, which of course means another episode of Monday Night Raw. My name is Jordan Huie, you are here with us on the Overtimer tonight for our live coverage! And tonight on WWE Raw we had merely one match announced in advance, a rather intense and big-name bout pitting AJ Styles and Randy Orton against one another. The bout turned to be our main event for the evening. This match of course centers around AJ’s recent matches with Rey Mysterio, in which the United States Championship was on the line in each, and both times, the matches ended with Randy Orton screwing AJ out of the gold.
AJ demanded a match with Orton and finally got it tonight, just wrapped up at the time of writing. This match also happens to be a rematch from this year’s WrestleMania, which is largely unacknowledged as they don’t expect anyone to remember something from eight months ago.
You can see an excerpt of my recap of this match below:
Both men fight to their feet, AJ throws some shots and hits the ropes, right into the Snap Powerslam! Inverted Backbreaker, but Orton collapses due to his bum knee. Cover for 2. Randy takes AJ up top and pursues. Wants a superplex, but AJ slips through his legs, trips him onto the top turnbuckle. Hits the ropes, another chopblock nailed! Springboard Moonsault gets a nearfall! Orton reverses, throws him into the ropes for the Draping DDT! Crowd rises as Orton spins, stalks for the RKO but AJ counters it into the Calf Crusher! It’s right back in, Orton making his way to the ropes, AJ stands with his leg in hand but gets kicked away. AJ gets taken to the apron, wants the Phenomenal Forearm, Orton jumps for the RKO counter, AJ was feigning, Orton sells the knee on his landing so AJ tries for it again – but Orton counters with the RKO any-damned way for the win!
Winner: Randy Orton
Orton therefore scored the main event victory, but couldn’t stand tall as the OC attacked afterwards and even an attempted save from the Viking Raiders failed as the heels won out.
