One of the biggest shocks in wrestling last year was the news that Dean Ambrose would not be signing a new contract with WWE. He completed his contract with WWE, and did a final run with his Shield brothers in Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns. After that, on the day his contract expired, a video popped up on his long vacant Twitter account. This was the return of Jon Moxley. Since that moment, he was reborn. Gone was the tired worn out man we saw for years in WWE, he reignited his passion for wrestling. He would show up at the end of AEW’s first PPV Double Or Nothing and laid out Kenny Omega, while also debutting for New Japan Pro Wrestling to become IWGP United States Champion.
“I Feel Like I’m 18 Again”
When he left WWE, he went on Chris Jerichos podcast, and while he thanked the WWE for his time there, he blasted their creative direction. He has not been quiet about being frustrated and depressed having to work with the material given to him by WWE. He has stated in the past that he is angry he was forced to give up a huge money contract to save his passion for his job. The tone has changed since he has been out of their system.
Speaking with Fightful, Jon Moxley had the following to say about his return to wrestling as he knew it.
“I didn’t know if I’d just disappear for a year or two years, I don’t know what I wanted to do. I just knew I wanted to have fun wrestling again. It all came back so quickly it was almost like waking up out of a long nap or something. I keep going back to it, I feel like I’m 18 again, I can’t wait to keep getting back into the ring and trying new stuff. I pop up awake in the middle of the night going “Oooh!” with ideas and stuff, and I like to just go to the ring sometimes with no ideas and just see what happens on the fly.”
Jon Moxley Has Been On Top Of The World
Being able to reopen his creativity and passion for performing gave him one of the best years in his career, and there are many more on the horizon for him. He is on his way to a shot against Chris Jericho for the AEW Championship at their upcoming PPV, which will likely produce a better match than their Ambrose Asylum mess from WWE.
By simply being himself, he be would become the most newsworthy star in wrestling, and possibly the biggest star in the industry at the time of writing. This could have happened to him in WWE, but he was micromanaged and typecast as a goofy babyface. While this lead to some great moments like when he showed up dressed as The Mountie, overall it hindered his career for years. It is great to have him back.
