The Big Show returned to in-ring action last week on Raw for the first time in a year. He joined Kevin Owens and Samoa Joe’s feud with Seth Rollins and the AOP (Authors of Pain). But it’s rumored that Rey Mysterio to replace Big Show is a thing in the near future.
This isn’t as big a surprise as the Big Show stepping in because Mysterio was one of Rollins targets, and the reason Samoa Joe got involved in the first place. In fact, it brings up the question as to why Mysterio was taken out of the feud even for a short time?
Dropping the US Championship
There is a thought that Rey Mysterio dropped the US Championship a couple of weeks back to Andrade to free him up for this feud instead of being a demotion. While this makes sense as a way of pushing Andrade as he’s rumored to be starting a feud with a major face in upcoming Raws.
Beyond that, it’s hard to see how it makes sense, but if it works, who am I to complain? I’m an Andrade and Mysterio fan, so I’ll take it as a win-win.
The thing that bothers me is Mysterio hasn’t been himself for a while now. His matches have been off and lacking the usually energy he’s brought to the table in previous years. It’s easy to understand he’s at the end of his career and may not be able to do what he used to. That’d explain why he dropped the championship and will be returning to this feud as part of a group.
As we’ve seen in the past with aging superstars, it’s easier to hide their deficiencies when they have a younger, healthier partner to carry the load and allow them to pick their spots to shine.
It happens, and after all the years of exciting matches, it’s good to see him getting into the spotlight once again.
When will the switch happen?
That’s unclear, as inquisitr.com mentioned, but it’s expected to be soon. As for this week, we’ll reportedly get to see the Big Show in action as he, Joe, and Owens are expected to face Rollins and the AOP in a six-man “Fist Fight.”
My best guess is the Big Show will be “injured” somehow, possibly before the match. It’s not beyond the AOP or Rollins to do something like that as it’s a heelish thing in general. It’ll also give the Big Show a chance to slip out of the spotlight and for Rey Mysterio to replace Big Show.
What’s sad about this if true is once again, the Big Show was used to put someone over instead of being a dominate force. He may be nearing the end of his career as well, but WCW handled him far better and the Giant than WWE has. But that’s another story.
