Ladies and gentlemen, breaking news! Just minutes ago at the time of this writing, AEW’s official twitter account revealed that TNT has extended AEW Dynamite through 2023! They were first announced to be joining the network back in June of last year and only premiered three months ago back in October. General consensus is that TNT got away with a great deal for their value here. AEW Dynamite debuted far above projections and, though they slip down the ratings some weeks, they’ve actually remained far above initial estimates the entire time.
So one can assume TNT has been overjoyed with the results thus far. And it can only be seen as a good sign that they’ve already decided to extend them. It should be noted that the language “through 2023” generally means through the end of the year. So it’s basically guaranteed that we’ll have four more years of this marriage! Not only that, but they’re branching out as well!
This same press release also confirmed that AEW will be getting a second weekly show of some sort on TNT!
One might be quick to assume that this means some kind of B-Show, ala Thunder. They do already produce AEW Dark every week and so it wouldn’t be too tough to simply put that on the air. But given the whole concept of the show, being that they can do things that wouldn’t make TNT in the first place and have a less stressful environment for inexperienced workers to have full-length matches, this seems unlikely.
It’s also possible that the Road To series will be adapted to a weekly show in some way, shape or form. It’s notable that the popular series has made a return this month, with every episode of Dynamite getting one, such as Road To Miami for tonight’s episode. It wouldn’t be crazy to think this was them trying to prove they can pull that off, a pilot of sorts, before getting a more upscaled version that could air every week on TNT.
Either way, it’s exciting news for AEW fans! Read the whole press release yourself here!
