The long-awaited night is finally here. For the first time, we’ll be to actually call this the January 5 Dome Show! Silly as that sounds, this is serious stuff here, a monumental and historic night for pro wrestling. Wrestle Kingdom 14 is one double the scope of everything that has come before it, a full weekend of wrestling greatness. And now we’re here on Night 2, where things are heating up more than ever before.
I’m Jordan Huie of the Overtimer, and it’s a good thing my sleep schedule was already a great big mess by the end of last year! Otherwise I’d never be able to stick with you for the entirety of these shows! It’s a great trade-off, if you ask me. I’ll be previewing the action for tonight, just as I did for Night 1, so let’s get to it!
Gauntlet Match For The NEVER Openweight Six-Man Tag Team Championships
Alright, so the long-time Trios champs – made up of Ryusuke Taguchi, Togi Makabe & Toru Yano – will be defending their titles against a litany of other teams in a gauntlet here on the pre-show of Wrestle Kingdom 14 Night 2. The challengers are as follows:
- Chaos (Tomohiro Ishii, Yoshi-Hashi & Robbie Eagles)
- Bullet Club (Bad Luck Fale, Chase Owens & Yujiro Takahashi)
- Los Ingobernables de Japon (Evil, Bushi & Shingo Takagi)
- Suzuki-gun (Taichi, El Desperado & Yoshinobu Kanemaru)
That is certainly a lot of names to fit into a match, which is more or less the point. Much as I personally think trios matches have a lot to offer and would like to see a significant trios title, this is not the one. The NEVER Openweight Six-Man titles exist as an excuse for more big tag matches to help get more people on cards, and as filler to give people stuff to do while they’re waiting for actual angles to arise. The main benefit to having them is every other title looks more valuable by comparison.
The current champs have actually held those titles since January 30th of last year, and yet I always find myself having to check to see who has them. It’s just not that big a deal. And that being the case, picking the winner here is kind of a crap-shoot. These are the only titles without a real plan or destination, they tend to just go however Gedo’s leaning on a given day. Any team in this match is just as likely as any other to win.
But if I had to pick any, I’d go with Chaos, if only because Robbie Eagles is someone who made a lot of waves last year but has very little to show for it. Everyone else either achieved something else of note or has done so in the past. Robbie’s probably the only one who could benefit much, and him getting the win seems a solid little pre-show feel good moment.
