WWE Sheamus On Why The Bar Broke Up

There have been few tag teams that have been as dominate as the Bar in recent WWE memory. From 2016 until April 2019, Sheamus and Cesaro formed a dynamic team that captured a record setting four Raw tag tea championships and one Smackdown tag team championship. They were virtually unstoppable at times, but their end came in a less than memorable event.

    Sheamus injury

After losing their Smackdown Tag Team Championship to the Usos at WrestleMania 35, Sheamus was injured on the following Smackdown, suffering a concussion during a six-man tag match against the New Day.

With Sheamus out of the picture, Cesaro was drafted to Raw a few weeks later as a solo performer. A short time later, Cesaro cut a promo saying the Bar broke up because Sheamus too time off.

While Cesaro has had impressive moments as a singles competitor, he’s struggled to rise out of the mid-card ranks and is currently teamed with Shinsuke Nakamura and Sami Zayn, the latter and a “liberator.”

Sheamus reportedly took time off to heal and evaluate what he would do. This led to rumors circulating that he was going to retire. Instead, he took his time to ensure he was over any concussion effects and he returned a few weeks ago leaner and looking in great shape.

The real reason the Bar broke up

Sheamus on why the Bar broke up (Thanks to ringsidenews.com for the quote):

“Well me and Cesaro have achieved everything there is to do, we’re five-time tag champs. I think The Bar is something where we have cemented our legacies as The Bar, like we can always go back to that and anything we do will be massive, but we’re both on a bit of a singles journey at the moment and there’s still a lot I want to achieve as a singles guy. Obviously the Intercontinental title is the one I still haven’t won, so that’s all I really care about right now.”

So far, Cesaro has had mixed results in his singles career, as he’s been used more to put others over then not. He’s currently involved in a storyline as Shinsuke Nakamura’s friend/tag team partner as part of Sami Zayn’s stable.

This could bring him face to face with Sheamus since Sheamus appears to be planning to challenge Shinsuke Nakamura for the Intercontinental Championship at some point. Of course, this assumes Nakamura retains the title after the Royal Rumble. That may be a bit much to hope for given Braun Strowman’s hunting for the championship, but defeating Strowman would be a great way for Sheamus to return to in-ring action.

If Nakamura retains the title, then it’ll give Cesaro a chance to help his old friend and possibly bring the Bar together for a short time tease. Or, more likely, it’ll start a feud between the two that’ll help lift Cesaro out of the mid-card he’s been maligned in while putting over other superstars.

Teasing retirement or more to come?

While he’s denied this previously, none more adamant than returning to the ring even if in limited action. But since he’s mentioned that the only championship he hasn’t won yet is the Intercontinental Championship, that may be the crowning jewel he’s seeking before calling it a career.

Think of it this way, some athletes and entertainers retire when they’ve done everything they set out to do. When the challenges are gone, there’s nothing left for them to strive for.

This is something fans won’t like, but in the end it’s up to him and how he feels about his career.

Do you think there’s a bigger angle to Sheamus or does he simply want to be in the Grand Slam club?
