It’s Friday once again everybody and you know what that means. Another edition of WWE Friday Night SmackDown is upon us. In a much hyped appearance, John Cena will be making his long-awaited return to WWE TV here tonight on SmackDown! I’m Jordan Huie of the Overtimer, here to give you the same full coverage as always. That means live results and recaps from the show as they come, plus previews of all we can expect. However not much has been announced for tonight, the post-Super Show-Down edition of SD. It seems like they’re just plugging appearances for Goldberg and John Cena and calling it a day. And y’know, I kinda can’t fault that, it’ll probably work just fine.
John Cena To Appear Live Tonight On WWE Friday Night SmackDown
It has been quite a while since the former poster boy of WWE John Cena has made an appearance on Raw or SmackDown. He was last seen doing a bit of a battle rap with the Usos this past July. Before that, we hadn’t seen him since WrestleMania where he had an encounter with Elias, ending with an Attitude Adjustment. His last match to date was on the January 14th episode of Raw, where he was part of a fatal four way with a shot at the Universal title on the line, a losing effort for him obviously.
Coming from the generation that I do, having just started watching wrestling at basically the exact point that Cena took off as the top guy, it’s still a little weird sometimes to think about just how absent he is now. Especially because he was performing at a level higher than he ever had during his last few years, only to just kinda, stop showing up one day.
WWE’s popularity has yet to recover since then. Honestly, it’s surprising they don’t try to make more use of him than they do. Of course I think Cena himself doesn’t particularly want to be a Lesnar-esque type, that was something he said plenty of times throughout his career and has held true thus far. His sporadic return matches tend to be surprisingly short notice, not made out to be as big a deal as they could, and he always puts others over when they do happen.
Still, word is that he is scheduled to wrestle at WrestleMania. Originally he was slotted against Elias bizarrely, but after a change of plans in the last week, he’s now expected to have a much more logical match with the Fiend instead. It might be teased here. Cena could also announce his intent to join the SmackDown Men’s Elimination Chamber match coming up soon.
