There is another new addition to the NJPW dojo system, and he has the potential to be one of their top prospects. This is Joe Bailey, real name Bailey Matthews, who is the son of wrestling legend William Regal. While this connection could have been a very easy route into the WWE Performance Center, he is taking his own route in wrestling. He was spotted at ringside for the recent NJPW shows, doing the typical duties of the Young Lions. While he hasn’t shaved off his hair yet, he likely will once his training starts in the dojo.
Joe Baileys Career To This Point
Making his debut in 2018, he has wrestled a few dark matches for Progress & Evolve. He lost a dark match to Jordon Breaks at PROGRESS Wrestling’s Chapter 79 in London. Joe then lost to Harlem Bravado in the opening match of EVOLVE 117 in New York City. Progress & Evolve are companies linked to WWE, and NXT especially. His father being a huge part of NXT likely helped get him his start in those companies, and Regal having old friends in the NJPW Dojo wouldn’t have hurt in that process. Regal has maintained a friendship with Yuji Nagata since their days in WCW together. Nagata is one of the head trainers in the NJPW Dojo, and will likely help ensure that Bailey is trained properly for his old friend.
Baileys Potential
While there exists very little footage of Bailey in the ring, you have to have talent in order to get into the NJPW dojo. His father was one of the best wrestlers of his era, and we can only hope for the same out of Joe Bailey. He will also have a chance to create a second generation rivalry with David Finlay, son of Fit Finlay. Finlay took a similar path to Bailey, joining NJPW to find his on way in wrestling instead of cashing in on his dad working for WWE for a shot at the performance center. We will hopefully Bailey make his debut for NJPW very soon, and can get a taste of what is to come.
