The NXT Women’s divison has been consistently one of the best parts of the black & gold brand, and that isn’t limited to just the top stars like Rhea Ripley & Io Shirai. Their talent pool is incredibly deep, meaning even undercard matches catch full attention. We saw this on this weeks episode of NXT, as two alumni of the Mae Young Classic would clash. The recently debutting Mercedes Martinez faced the recently returning Kacy Catanzaro in a match to see who will climb higher in the division.
Mercedes Martinez Defeats Kacy Catanzaro
On the surface level, there wasn’t much at stake here. Both women are just getting started up on NXT again, and the year is still in it’s infancy. Despite this, they both knew that in this hyper competitive division, every win matters. If you want to get a shot at the NXT Women’s Championship, you need to prove yourself worthy. This means that even in a match like this, you see the high level of skill from the women involved.
It was a David vs. Goliath encounter, with the tiny Kacy Catanzaro looking up at an imposing Martinez. She would use her power to throw Kacy around like a small child, while Kacy used her speed and athletic prowess to stay on the move and pick away at the bigger opponent. It was a fairly even match up until Martinez caught Kacy with a powerful Fisherman Buster to notch her first singles victory on NXT TV.
Could Martinez Earn A Shot At The NXT Women’s Championship After Wrestlemania?
It will take many more to get to a championship shot, but with Rhea Ripley tied up with Binaca Belair and possibly Charlotte Flair, Martinez will have many more chances to build up to a shot at glory. She has the skills to become the champion in any division, being a 19 year veteran of the squared circle. She is someone to keep an eye on, as she seems to be here to stay and is looking to add her name to the storied list of champions in NXT. It will take a lot to stop her.
Do you think Mercedes Martinez is championship material? Is she better off staying away from the top of the mountain? Let us know what you think down below in the comments.
