One of the most shocking moments from NXT Takeover Portland was when Mae Young Classic alumni Raquel Gonzales made her debut. This came as the finish of the street fight between Tegan Nox & Dakota Kai. Gonzales would make her presence known as she would attempt to throw Nox through a table, giving Dakota Kai the victory. While their partnership offers some uncertainty, it also shows great potential, while referencing the past.
The Story Of HBK & Diesel
Back in the early 90’s, we saw one of the most shocking turns in wrestling history when Shawn Michaels put Marty Jennety through the barbershop window. This was the birth of the Heart Break Kid, the launching point for one of the biggest stars in WWE history. He would soon get someone to back him up, in the hulking Diesel. Together they would dominate WWE and both earn championships, including reigns as WWE Champion. Diesel would famously leave WWE alongside Razor Ramon to debut for WCW as Kevin Nash & Scott Hall, while Michaels would be one of the biggest stars of the WWE in the late ’90s.
The Parallels With Kai & Gonzales Come Cheap
With Kai having made a shocking turn on a longtime partner, then gaining some muscle in her corner, its not hard to see the parallels here. What makes it even more obvious is that Michaels himself has a hand in NXT, being very close friends with Triple H who runs the brand. Michaels has been reliving his career through the stars of NXT, and this is yet another strong example of this.
Will Dakota Kai Become NXT Womens Champion?
One of the most prestigious titles in WWE is the NXT Women’s Champion. Having only been held by a handful of top level workers, and being the choice for Royal Rumble winner Charlotte to chase at Wrestlemania, it’s legacy only grows. Dakota Kai fits the mold of a top level worker, and with her recent turn to a vicious heel, she might have found that final ingredient in Gonzales. We could very well see history repeat itself, with Dakota Kai following the path of Shawn Michaels to stardom.
Do you think these parallels are just coincidental, or is this a case of Michaels reliving his career through NXT? Let us know what you think in the comments down below.
