Ever since Roman Reigns smashed leukemia, it has been hard for fans to do anything put cheer him. Even after a multi-month feud with Baron Corbin, people have remained positive. With rumors of him being slotted into a Wrestlemania match with The Fiend, could this all change?
WWE Has Kept Roman Reigns Away From The Main Event
One reason why Roman Reigns has been able to build up so much good will with fans, is that he isn’t being positioned as the top champion. He has only had one championship match in recent memory, a DQ victory over then Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura. He has instead been more focused on simple upper-midcard feuds, and being a leader in situations like Survivor Series.
The main complaint fans have with Roman Reigns, is that since The Shield broke up, he has been constantly in the main event and chasing the WWE or Universal Championships. Having him spend some much needed time out of the spotlight was a good thing. it has let him show more personality than an underdog who always wins.
Fans Love The Fiend
Since it’s inception, fans have clung to the new character of Bray Wyatt. Anyone who faces The Fiend is doomed to not get the intended reaction. Even Daniel Bryan was not able to get universally cheered during his feud with The Fiend. With Roman Reigns being the next big name in line to take a shot at the Fiend, WWE is risking undoing his his good will with this. If Roman is the one to finally overcome The Fiend, you can almost guarantee that there will be fan backlash from a good chunk of WWE fans.
It will be a fine line for WWE to walk. It is clear that WWE wants Roman Reigns to be the face of the company, and while Becky Lynch has been filling that role throughout 2019, it is not long before Roman gets back on the marquee.
Does WWE Care If Roman Reigns Gets Boos?
While showing your displeasure to certain superstars can force reactions from the backstage staff, they are often just happy that their stars get a reaction. If Roman Reigns walked to the ring in complete silence from fans, that would be all that could indicate that what he is doing isn’t working. John Cena spent many years getting mixed reactions from fans, and that will not change with Roman Reigns in his role.
