There’s an old belief that the dram behind the scenes is more interesting than what the public sees, and it appears that Vince McMahon is proving that right. While there were rumors about this floating around awhile back, it’s now been confirmed as Chris Jericho confirmed Vince McMahon asked if he could get out of his AEW contract.
McMahon changed his mind
Of course, he did. The man’s only human, and we’ve heard that often enough when the end of matches are changed at the last minute.
More than that is the way McMahon repeated the same mistake he made 23 years ago with Scott Hall. At least, according to Chris Jericho.
During his podcast, Talk Is Jericho, Chris Jericho said that Vince McMahon asked if he could get out of his AEW contract, but he added context that goes a long way to helping us understand it wasn’t as petty as it might seem. Thank you wrestlinginc.com for the transcript.
“I’m not in AEW because I was a rebel. I’m with AEW because Vince went, ‘Go.’ And then, when I went, he went, ‘Did you sign the contract?’ I said, ‘Well, yeah.’ He said, ‘Can you get out of it?’ ‘No! You told me to sign it!’
But [McMahon] had the opportunity to stop it like he did with [Hall], which is very interesting to me because 23 years later, he made the same [mistake]. I love Vince.”
There’s no denying there’s a mutual respect exists between the two men, and there is always the chance we’ll see them work together again at some point. Still, this is an interesting story that shows history does repeat.
The timing is interesting
While this was a rumor a few months back, the fact it’s been brought into the light of day and verified by Chris Jericho says a couple of things. The first is the fans, and probably the promotions themselves, are no where near tired of hearing or talking about the Wednesday Night War. It makes sense since many were hoping this promotional feud would be as hot and exciting as the Monday Night Wars were twenty years ago.
But they’re not.
And that brings up to reason number two.
It’s good business to keep the conversation going about the birth of AEW, AEW signing Jericho, and Vince McMahon’s reaction to it. If it’s fresh in the public’s mind, it doesn’t matter that NXT is similar to WWE’s other brands on several levels. It doesn’t matter that AEW needs some tightening up of their storylines and in-ring action.
At the end of the day, the hope is as long as people hear there’s a rivalry, we’ll tune in. Of course, this runs the risk of burning us out when the action is decent, but no where near the level it was during the Monday Night Wars.
Though, I have to admit it’s still fun having two wrestling shows on again. In a world dominated by the WWE, it’s great to have an alternative. Hopefully, AEW will get some of their issues squared away. Once they stop with the video game wrestling and focus more on ring psychology (this goes for the WWE, too), the fans will tune in and things will get interesting.
