This years Wrestlemania continues to get weirder and weirder by the day. It is the first of it’s kind in two ways, as it will be the first Wrestlemania without a crowd, as well as the first to take place over two nights. There was a load of strong matches going into the event, one being the planned defense of Goldberg’s Universal Championship. After beating ‘The Fiend’ Bray Wyatt for the title, he would be challenged by Roman Reigns for Wrestlemania 36, in a match that will not be taking place.
Roman Reigns Is Out From Wrestlemania 36
This news doesn’t come as a major shock to anyone. This past year, Roman Reigns came back from a battle with leukemia, which had resurfaced in 2018 causing him to vacate the Universal Championship. Because of this, it is reasonable to expect that he would be at a higher risk of contracting COVID-19, and as such this is a very smart choice for him. Roman has not wrestled since the pandemic was announced, only appearing in promos with Goldberg to hype this match.
If Goldberg Will Still Defend, Who’s Next?
While there are rumors that Goldberg is among the other superstars to not be performing at the event, he is still set to defend at this time. There are a few options for people who could be easily placed into this match. The first is a man who was not booked for this show but has a history with Goldberg, that being ‘The Game’ Triple H. While he is mostly done in the ring, he has never formally retired and has remained in phenomenal shape. This would have been the first year that he was healthy but didn’t compete at Wrestlemania.
Another strong option is Braun Strowman, who has been kept strong enough to be slotted into a world title match easily. He recently dropped the WWE Intercontinental Championship, but that was in a 3 on 1 handicap match against three of the best on Smackdown. The final option people predict is an outlandish one, but this is a weird enough time. Matt Riddle of NXT has had issues in the past with Goldberg, with him calling the Hall of Famer out on Twitter, clashing with him backstage at Summerslam, and using the spear & jackhammer in his matches. With Riddle residing in Florida, they could have picked him for a special match with Goldberg at Wrestlemania.
