The WWE has been taking some massive body blows the last few months from various sources, many of them caused by their own actions. Because of that, it stands to reason that Vince McMahon would want to keep some things quiet and not upset the fans or shareholders more than they are. In that regard, they managed to keep the news of Triple H’s quiet demotion for four to five months.
Another title loss?
It’s come as a shock to fans that the 14-time world champion lost another title, this time in WWE’s front offices.
According to Dave Meltzer, and reported through whatculture.com (https://whatculture.com/wwe/triple-h-34-quietly-demoted-34-by-vince-mcmahon ) and other sites, the news became available when a new Securities and Exchange Commission filing shows Paul “Triple H” Levesque’s title has changed.
It’s rumored that this happened in December around the time co-presidents George Barrios and Michelle Wilson left. While their leaving prompted WWE stock to plummet, it makes sense why they kept Triple H’s new title hush hush, especially when it’s reportedly considered by many to be a quite demotion.
The revelation came when it was notice that Triple H’s title was changed from Executive Vice President of Talent, Live Events, and Creative to Executive Vice President of Global Talent Strategy and Development.
Basically, from what Meltzer has said, it appears Triple H was removed from being the head of talent (including negotiations) and is now tasked with NXT’s general operations like expanding NXT’s business, finding TV deals for NXT TV overseas, and will continue as senior producer and creative lead for NXT’s Wednesday show.
It’s also been reported that McMahon’s Chief of Staff, Brad Blum, has taken over Triple H’s old responsibilities.
The first step?
While this is a surprise to many given NXT is considered the WWE’s best brand, it’s not when we consider there were rumors around November/December that if NXT didn’t start beating AEW Dynamite regularly, Triple H could be fired.
What makes the timing more curious is the last time NXT may have beaten AEW ratings-wise was Christmas when AEW wasn’t on the air, or somewhere close to that. So far, AEW is undefeated in 2020. So, if Triple H was “demoted” to focus more on expanding NXT and not the talent, that could be part of the reason for this.
Either way, it’s hard to know for sure. NXT was meant to counterprogram AEW and many critics called it out for that, so that probably hasn’t helped. But what won’t help is this news coming out.
If McMahon thought he had problems before, he may be in for a whole new world of them given Triple H is well-respected by many and he’s been viewed as the heir apparent for whenever McMahon decides to step aside.
The fact is, most fans feel Triple H should’ve been running things for a few years now, and I have to agree. What’re your thoughts? Is this a bad move by McMahon or is he being shrewd?
