Few singles competitors have come together and been as much of a force as Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage as the Mega Powers. They were virtually unbeatable, and the two top wrestlers in the world took us on an phenomenal ride from their inception in February 1988 to their separation a couple of months later, and then their destruction at WrestleMania 5. On this day in history, April 2, 1989, the Mega Powers exploded, and made wrestling history in doing so.

Using real life drama
The storyline was simple, yet compelling as it played on Savage’s real life paranoia about others having an interest in his real life wife and storyline manager, Miss Elizabeth.
According to reports and interviews from Hulk Hogan, his ex-wife Linda Bollea, and others, Savage grew so paranoid that he accused Hogan of having an affair with Elizabeth.

The WWE pushed the idea in story, whether they knew it was closely mirroring real life or not isn’t known, but it’s a safe guess they knew.
If they didn’t then Hogan picked Elizabeth upon his shoulder and stayed close to her on his own to sell it, and it worked. The rift in the team was created and widened with each passing week.
The Mega Powers: Explode!
A match of this caliber could only be set for WrestleMania 5, and everything was coming around to make it an unforgettable this day in history.
Aside from the epic feel of the match, it was a showcase on how they should be done as Savage, being the aggrieved and therefore aggressive party, came out strong, working his tail off as he took the offensive to Hogan and controlled it through most of it.
Hogan was no slouch as he sold Savage’s attacks to set it up for his customary come back for the win.
But that wasn’t a given, as we could see he’d been paying special attention to Elizabeth throughout their time together. It made him as much a villain as Savage in many fans’ eyes despite Savage being considered the heel.
In the end, Hogan reigned supreme and reclaimed the WWF World Heavyweight Championship, but their friendship would be fractured in storyline and reportedly in real life for years afterwards.
While there are different opinions as to when their real life problems started, there are just as many about their reconciling before Savage’s death. To be fair, Hogan looks sincere when he talks about it, as he does when discussing reconciling with other wrestlers over the years.
However it’s laid out, the Mega Powers storyline has touched so many fans because of the realism it drew on from real life, and it was perfectly done.
