Tonight we will see a live episode of Monday Night RAW, and shows like NXT & Smackdown Live are expected to follow suit. They will still be done with no crowd, but they won’t be pre-taped like the last few weeks of WWE content. This left many scratching their heads, as Florida has a stay at home warning in place for their citizens. WWE had previously batch taped a ton of content, including Wrestlemania 36. However, reports indicate that WWE has been classed as an essential business, and will be able to hold shows as they wish, provided they remain safe.
WWE Will Be Self-Policing
During this pandemic of COVID-19, WWE will be staying safe when it comes to weekly TV and PPV, as they will be able to do shows like normal without interference from law enforcement or other outside sources. They will be in control of their own affairs, and be trusted to keep things safe. This is a terrible choice, given that there was a confirmed case of COVID-19 in the company, from one of the staff on hand. They have since recovered, but WWE continuing to do shows is reckless. This was even addressed by Jerry Demings — mayor of Orange County, Florida.
AEW Will Likely Not Get The Same Treatment
While AEW did the sensible thing in batch taping months of content before stepping away for a while, they would likely not be deemed essential like WWE is in Florida, despite also being centered there. They will likely be unable to do shows in the same way, as WWE has been deemed essential; not professional wrestling as a whole.
It is unclear why WWE is getting special treatment in this case, it could be that Florida views their presence as a boost to industries like tourism, Vince McMahon could have used his connection to Donald Trump to help sway the governor, or money could have been offered. We will likely never know, but we do know WWE will be running their shows until they physically can’t.
