WWE Money In The Bank 2020 is soon at hand folks. We’ve got what promises to be an extremely weird show coming up this evening. In a match that’s seemed inevitable since a few weeks before WrestleMania, tonight Tamina has a shot at Bayley’s WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship. Here at the Overtimer you can bet you’ll get the same in-depth coverage as always for the show this evening. That means a live recap and results of the show as they come, plus a preview of everything that’s on tap.
WWE SmackDown Women’s Championship: Bayley (c) vs. Tamina
It’s still a little weird to me to see Tamina running around on a regular basis. Now, of all times, is the era that makes a frequent character out of her. Even though it’s only been a few months, I’m positive she’s had ‘runs’ in the past that were shorter than this. She’ll undoubtedly disappear again, be it because of injury or any other myriad of reasons, but will she become a champion before that happens? …Ehh, I can’t really imagine so.
Tamina has been on the WWE main roster for almost exactly ten years now. In hindsight, she was one of the last benefactors of a lengthy period where they were signing up every last second or third generation wrestler they possibly could, they were really just obsessed with the concept for the longest time. She debuted in May of 2010, and I imagine many have forgotten this, but she was initially paired with the Usos. This is one of those bits of continuity that seem to have completely disappeared as even when Tamina was later teaming with Jimmy’s wife Naomi, this little connection was never brought up.
I bring up how long she’s been here to highlight the fact that, even though they like to occasionally push her as a big scary monstrous force in the division, she has never held any women’s title. The only championship to her name is the 24/7 title, one of the many to have claimed that belt in a totally random one-off. If she were about to finally take home her first women’s championship after all this time, surely they would’ve been playing up this fact for the past several weeks, right? Yannow, the same way they did with Braun Strowman in the weeks leading up to his IC title victory. But there’s been no hint of that here.
Even besides that, it’s clearly not the direction. Bayley will be feuding with Sasha over the title soon. Presumably that’s penciled in for SummerSlam. There’s really no reason to do that split AFTER the title is out of the picture, so Bayley retains until then.
