Drew McIntyre defends the WWE Championship against Seth Rollins this evening. Here at the Overtimer you can bet you’ll get the same in-depth coverage as always for the show this evening. That means a live recap and results of the show as they come, plus a preview of everything that’s on tap.
WWE Championship: Drew McIntyre (c) vs. Seth Rollins
Some would say this is too soon for this match, that it should be saved for a major PPV. Me, I’m a little conflicted on that for a lot of reasons. The main thing is that I fully believe that Money In The Bank should be a marquee event on WWE’s calendar. Even now, after they’ve done their best to try and dilute the MITB winners, over 80% of the people who take the case become champions as a direct result. In theory it’s one of their biggest star-makers, and has effectively done this on several occasions. It should serve as the replacement to King Of The Ring at last as the fifth show in a Big 5. Or if we’re married to a Big 4, honestly I consider it more significant than Survivor Series already.
But it’s spot on the calendar as the WrestleMania Aftermath show kinda hurts it’s chances of being that event I think. And if you move it forward a month, it might be seen as too close to SummerSlam for that as well. Still, if you built up the ladder matches better, it could become a major selling point almost akin to the Rumble, without necessarily needing long built feuds. As far as this match specifically, I also really dislike how Rollins became No. 1 Contender directly off of a loss to Kevin Owens at WrestleMania. But that’s just the WWE way. From that perspective I’d have definitely held off until Seth could get more momentum back but c’est la vie.
All that said. This should be great, there’s really no reason it shouldn’t be a damn fine match, crowd or no crowd. But I can’t possibly imagine Seth is winning the title right now, they’re pushing McIntyre so hard and have given way too much up for him to up and lose the gold a month after winning it. Drew McIntyre to retain.
