It is no secret that WWE always wanted Drew McIntyre to be a star, and that has been realized in 2020. He is the reigning WWE Champion, having beaten Brock Lesnar at Wrestlemania 36. This was, undoubtedly the biggest match in his career. However, his career peak might have come earlier if plans played out as intended for McIntyre, as he almost got a chance to break the streak.
Drew McIntyre Was Set To Face The Undertaker At Wrestlemania 26
In his second year on the WWE roster, McIntyre was flying high. He was enjoying a reign as WWE Intercontinental Champion, and getting a push as the Chosen One of Vince McMahon. According to McIntyre while speaking with BT Sport, this would have lead up to him facing The Undertaker at Wrestlemania 26.
“When I was 24 I was told by Vince McMahon, ‘you don’t listen to anybody but the Undertaker, he’s going to be your mentor and whenever you’ve got a question you go straight to him’. And the inevitable goal was to have a big match between him and I. Unfortunately I wasn’t ready at the time, things worked out the way they worked out, and I believe it led to, instead of myself and Undertaker, Shawn Michaels and Undertaker, the retirement match. It was obviously a phenomenal match and I could not have delivered on that level at the time.”
Instead of facing The Undertaker as planned, McIntyre would be part of the Money In The Bank ladder match, won that year by Jack Swagger (now AEW star Jake Hager). McIntytre would hold the WWE Intercontinental Championship until Over The Limit 2010, where he lost to Kofi Kingston.
Could McIntyre Face The Undertaker In 2020?
While at that time, McIntyre was far from ready for a match on this scale, he absolutely is now. He has grown into a ring general, someone who can bring out the best in his opponents. A singles match was teased between the two last year, during the excellent tag team match involving McIntyre & Corbin facing Undertaker & Roman Reigns. With McIntyre as WWE Champion, we could see The Undertaker step up as a challenger for an event like Summerslam or Survivor Series, giving the legend one final title shot before his impending retirement. With the option for a cinematic match in their corner, it could be something special.
