Tonight’s the night, AEW Double or Nothing 2020 is soon upon us! Last-minute replacement Penelope Ford gets a major opportunity tonight as she goes up against Kris Statlander live on PPV! You can expect the same live coverage of the event as always, plus a preview of every match on the card! There’s plenty to talk about so let’s get underway!
Penelope Ford vs. Kris Statlander
Originally this match was set to be Statlander vs. Britt Baker. It was set up rather hurriedly compared to most Double or Nothing matches, with Britt suddenly deciding that she hated Kris and opting to keep the Lockjaw hold cinched in long after the conclusion of a tag match, just for the hell of it. Unfortunately Britt went down with an injury during the go-home show, and has since been pulled from the card. It seemed like it might be a severe one too, though we’re going to get the full update on the show itself. It’s quite the shame, Britt was really on a roll and has been a bit of a rising star ever since her heel turn.
In her absence comes Penelope Ford, who has slowly but surely been rising up the ranks in the women’s division these past few months. Her upset victory over Riho remains the highlight of her career so far. Now, out of nowhere, she has a singles match on the main card of a Pay-Per-View. It’s nice to see as Ford was one of the more underrated performers in AEW last year, it feels like she’s getting her due now.
She has something of a test against Statlander… and I do love her, she’s a great athlete and I’m much more receptive to silly gimmicks than most, but her matches can either be spectacular or a total mess. Sorta like a singles version of Private Party. For now anyway she’s someone who needs a solid opponent to keep her in line. We’ll see if Ford is up to that. Thanks to the pandemic, Kris has not done a ton since her Revolution title match against Nyla Rose.
This is an interesting match to call because I definitely would’ve predicted Britt Baker to get a major win if she had made it. It was simply the time for it, but now that’s changed of course. Does that mean Ford has another upset coming? We also have to consider the other women’s match tonight, the one with the title on the line. No doubt this match in theory should be used to set up the next contender, so whether the champion is Nyla Rose or Hikaru Shida coming out of this show would change the complexion of this a fair bit. I don’t reeeaally expect a title change, though it’s certainly not impossible. On balance, I think I’ll say Kris Statlander gets the victory.
