In wrestling, some moves gain a huge reputation due to the previous stars who used them. Moves will become linked to that wrestler due to their domination with them, or how perfectly they were able to execute them. Moves like Kazuchika Okadas ‘Rainmaker’ would be a good example, as while others use the move, it never looks as good when someone else does it. Today’s pressing example is the Sharpshooter, which while invented by Riki Choshu, was popularized in the west by Bret ‘The Hitman’ Hart. The master of the move, he won countless championships with it, and has now potentially passed it on to another Canadian Wrestler, AEW’s Shawn Spears.
Shawn Spears Asked Permission To Use The Hold As A Finisher
While Natalya in WWE was trained in the Hart Dungeon which gives her a right to the Sharpshooter, Shawn Spears took a different route to get this move in his arsenal. On this past Wednesday’s episode of AEW Dynamite, Shawn Spears would pick up a victory over Baron Black using the Sharpshooter. This is different as he usually uses a move he calls the C4 to win the match, and it had some fans upset as the move as such a legacy. However, Spears took to Twitter to address the situation. “For those commenting: A while back, I sent a text to Bret Hart asking a question. He told me: “Go for it, it works” Tonight as Chris Jericho mentioned, I paid tribute to a Canadian ICON by winning via the Sharpshooter It just makes sense. Mine now. #LoveYouBret”
By getting the blessing of Hart himself to use this move, we will likely be seeing Spears use the Sharpshooter much more frequently. It is an uncommon move to see in major promotions, simply due to the legacy it holds. Spears applied it well against Black, and will likely only get better using it in the future.
What Spears Needed To Find Success?
This very well could be what Spears needed to become a star in the company, as he recently lost in the first round of the TNT Championship tournament to Cody Rhodes, costing him his biggest chance in his AEW career so far. He is still looking for his perfect tag team partner under the instruction of Tully Blanchard.
Do you think Shawn Spears using the Sharpshooter is a good move? Will it bring him some more victories than the C4 does? Let us know what you think in the comment section down below.
