We’re about twenty minutes away now from tonight’s edition of WWE Friday Night SmackDown! So this seems as good a time as any to finish up the previews. Last week, the Forgotten Sons made a big impact, destroying the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Champions the New Day. Now, the champs want a shot at revenge and they’re taking on two of the Sons in a non-title match! Here at the Overtimer you can expect the same in-depth coverage as always, including live recaps and results and of course these very previews. So let’s get into it!
WWE SmackDown Tag Team Champions The New Day (Kofi Kingston & Big E) vs. The Forgotten Sons (Steve Cutler & Jaxson Ryker) w/ Wesley Blake (Non-Title)
On NXT they almost always kept Ryker out of the ring. The general act would see Cutler and Blake wrestle whilst Ryker was their scary bodyguard doing occasional interference spots. There’s a pretty good reason for that. He’s a scary big dude who can do one or two spots very effectively and seem like a real beast, but even after decades in the game he’s not really up to par as a worker. He’s not bad at all by old hoss standards but these days you have to be at a certain level to get on TV regularly. This isn’t to say I think he’ll bomb or anything. It’s a tag match and he can still easily be protected. Just seemed like they had the right idea back on NXT to me. Blake being at ringside isn’t quite the same level of menace either.
Speaking of their NXT run though, I gotta say it was a little funny seeing them just run through the New Day last week. The Sons have been NXT’s resident JTTS tandem for a while, getting occasional squash wins merely so they could look credible enough for other teams to get something out of beating them. Of course that rarely matters when you’re making the jump to Raw or SmackDown and there’s not really anything wrong with the big push. It’ll just, take a while to adjust to seeing them as a major threat, honestly. That said, I actually expect the Forgotten Sons to win this match. Now that the New Day have wrestled Morrison and Miz for about three straight months, they clearly need new opponents and the Sons seem to be the picks.
