On the coming episode of Friday Night Smackdown, the situation involving the Intercontinental Championship will be resolved. The current champion, Sami Zayn has not been seen on WWE TV since Wrestlemania 36, where he successfully defended the championship against Daniel Bryan. He refused to show up at the latest taping of Smackdown Live due to the COVID-19 threat. Because of this, one of the staple championships of the brand has been absent, and WWE will address this. What will become of the vacant championship?
Should WWE Do A Tournament To Decide A New Champion?
If Zayn is to be stripped of his championship, they will need a way to crown a new champion. With a Battle Royal not an option due to having to keep the number of wrestlers in a match lower, the next best option would be a tournament which can finish up at Backlash. With names like Cesaro, Sheamus, Shinsuke Nakamura, Drew Gulak, Daniel Bryan, Jeff Hardy and more available, they would be able to put on a fantastic series of matches.
Sheamus & Jeff Hardy have a brewing feud, and having them finally clash in the finals would be an excellent way to give them extra motivation to go to war. Hardy wants one more top singles run, and the Intercontinental Championship is the only title Sheamus needs to win in WWE.
A High Stakes Gauntlet Match
We could also see a gauntlet match for the championship, as WWE has been relying on that match type a lot lately. Examples include the Last Chance matches for the NXT Women’s Championship Ladder match, and the one last Monday to decide who got into Money In The Bank. Using the same cast of wrestlers, we could see WWE pull off their best gauntlet match yet, with someone like Daniel Bryan putting on another career performance to show why he is one of the best in the world, only to be stomped out by a heel. Someone like Sheamus or King Corbin would benefit greatly from this victory. This could happen at Backlash, or simply on an episode of Smackdown Live over the next few weeks.
