Tonight is another PPV in the age of the Pandemic, and I can only imagine what people will think looking back on these shows years from now. This time around it’s WWE Backlash 2020, where we’ll see a three way match for the Women’s Tag Team Championships. Sasha Banks and Bayley defend the belts against the IIconics (Billie Kay & Peyton Royce) and Bliss-Cross (Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross) in a triple threat! You can expect the same coverage as any major event gets from the Overtimer, including in-depth previews of each match.
WWE Women’s Tag Team Championships: Bayley & Sasha Banks (c) vs. The IIconics (Billie Kay & Peyton Royce) vs. Bliss-Cross (Alexa Bliss & Nikki Cross)
Bayley and Sasha Banks have been a dominant heel force in the SmackDown Women’s Division for quite some time now. Bayley’s been turning back challenger after challenger for basically a full year, interrupted only by a brief five day Charlotte Flair run. Speaking of Charlotte, Bayley even beat her in a champion vs. champion match a little while ago. All the while Sasha has been by her side, though plenty of cracks have been showing even since before WrestleMania. I mean honestly, depending on how you look at things, you could say we’re two and a half years into Sasha Banks and Bayley’s break-up angle, they first showed signs of tension in January of 2018 and it’s been a long-term plan that they’ve for whatever reason struggled to pull the trigger on ever since then.
Just when it looked like things were boiling over again, they suddenly won the Women’s Tag Team Championships. And I do mean suddenly, it really just kinda happened one week with them confronting Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross and getting a shot at their tag titles. If you’re the IIconics, this could be considered quite rude because they were already in the midst of going after Bliss-Cross themselves.
So this set up a triple threat match for the tag team titles. This was promoted by having another triple threat tag team match that involved 2/3rds of this bout, with Alexa Bliss and Nikki Cross replaced with Asuka and Charlotte Flair. You can imagine who won that match. Actually not only did the team that isn’t involved in this match win that but they did so in a one-upsmanship storyline where they used the two teams to send messages to one another rather than actually working together. So yeah get hype for this major tag team title match!! Bayley and Banks retain I suppose, they’ll probably drop them at Extreme Rules and parlay into a singles feud for SummerSlam. Although it’s pretty bold of me to assume they’ll actually split them this time, there’s not really any reason to think we won’t still be talking about this in the future tense a year from now.
