On ths past episode of WWE NXT, we would see Drake Maverick fail to win the Interim Cruiserweight Championship, losing to El Hijo Del Fantasma after a distraction from the masked men who have been kidnapping people like Raul Mendoza & Joquin Wilde. Maverick came to the aid of Fantasma who looked to be in danger, but once back in the ring would be hit with a Super Kick and the Phantom Driver, losing him the match. Despite this, the show would end with him being offered an NXT contract by Triple H, meaning he met his end goal anyways. It was a story which added a great deal of drama to what could have otherwise been a plain tournament. However there are some who feel WWE using someone being released in a storyline like this was in poor taste, including Lio Rush.
Lio Rush Was One Of The Men Who Lost His Job
Alongside Maverick and many others released was former NXT Cruiserweight Champion Lio Rush. His release didn’t come as a huge shock to many, as he had seemingly been clashing with management for a while before getting the boot. Supremely talented, we will not see him enter another ring until the COVID-19 pandemic is over and done with, and he has focused on his rap career with his debut album out now. Despite this, he remains a public figure within wrestling, and will always have his opinions.
Rush would take to Twitter to blast WWE on the choice to run a storyline like this. “Man….Are they going to hire everyone back then? Kind of a slap in the face to use this as a shoot work. But i guess I’m not surprised. Super happy for anyone getting there job back. But damn, real trauma and a lot of others were apart of this.” and go on to call it “Literally making a mockery of legitimate firings.” He would also follow this up by replying to a fan saying WWE will bring him back with “Who said I wanted to be back?”, showing that we likely will never see him in WWE again.
It is not hard to see why he feels this way. It was undeniably scummy for WWE to release so much of their talent during a pandemic, especially when they are still easily turning a profit. On the other hand, it was the choice of Maverick to continue to compete. He just as well could have stayed home and gave up, but he fought on. I’m sure others released would have loved a chance to reclaim their job, and Maverick proved his worth tenfold.
